Here you can find some explanations concerning terms of digital film production:
banding bands, unwanted steps in ramps (similar to year rings of trees). Often seen in ray tracing, rendering or compositing and colour corrections done afterwards to a smaller colour space (8-bit/colour).
binary [bi=2] number system consisting of one and zero
bit smallest binary data block with values of  0 or 1
blow up bringing to bigger scale, magnifying.   special PixelPartner service saving you enormous rendering time
CCD Charged Coupled Device, light sensitive sensors
cine abbreviation for cinema /cinematographic
Cineon Kodak Cineon® digital film system with 30-bit log colour space CineSite (see also log)
Cinemascope
(Panavision)
widescreen process;
the image is squeezed to its half by anamorphotical lenses and stretched to its original size during projection.
for renderings the aspect ratio of 1:2,35 (unsqueezed 1:1 pixel) or 1:1,175 (distorted 2:1 pixel) is needed
Cinemascope was used for Pixars feature animation "A Bug's Life".   Not used for commercials
compositing from different elements combined image
compression process to reduce the size of data packages
different codes are used for loss free (see lzw /rle /zip)  and quality reducing formats (JPEG, GIF...).
For digital film manipulation loss free compression is strongly recommended!
CRT Cathode Ray Tube
colour space /depth tonal range, max. number of steps per colour channel (8-bit=256, 10-bit=1024) (see also lin /log)
film recorder output device, consisting of a high resolution cathode ray tube and a film camera
film scanner input device, designed to record backlit frames with CCD elements
gamma defines the middle value of the intensity curve of a grey or colour channel (RGB).
correct gamma calibration is an absolute necessity to judge images on computer displays

k k = kilo = 1000, at data blocks 1024 (=10-bit) [y2k=year2000]
lin linear; colour space with regular tonal values. commonly used (see also log)
log logarithmic; colour space with weighted curve values: more steps in the lower tonal area - corresponds better with human way of reception than the linear colour space. (see also Cineon)
lzw Lempel Ziff Welch code for loss free data compression (TIFF)
very common, but licence fees appear!
lut abbreviation for look up table. For quick adaptation to colour spaces to compensate specific machine characteristics
morphing change of the appearance by weighted distortion while dissolving
pixarlog compression process, developed by Pixar for 3x11-bit logarithmic values and implemented to the TIFF-6.0 standard. Uses zip compression (see also lin /log /zip)
was used with 3:4 blow-up at Pixars feature animation films
pixel Picture element, image point
rendering calculation of images
RGB Red Green Blue, colour system with additive light mixing
resolution number of pixels of an image, measured horizontal x vertical
rle run length encoded, loss free data compression (different codes for TGA /SGI)
sfx sound effects (fx)
surround spatial sound system, see also Dolby
vfx visual effects (fx)
warping change of the appearance by weighted distortion
zip another loss free data compression (TIFF).
also used in popular programs like WinZip, gzip, pkzip for general data
