Film scanning is done high resolution 2k to 4k, 24-bit lin to 30-bit log on our cine scanner. Super-16 scans are made in 2k (1828 pixels horizontally) only, because of the lower image information. Image data is saved as Cineon sequences in 30 bit log format. Other data formats on request. In contrast to telecine like film scanning the pin registered movement of our cine scanner guarantees best picture stability as demanded for compositing work. Image format and scan area can be adjusted
to your demands. The storage of image data can be made on different media as
requested. Overview on scan sizes:
[Super 35 corresponds with 2048
(2k), 3072 (3k) and 4096 (4k) pixels horizontally] Our recommendation: Use the Cineon format with 30-bit log colour space. While recording with 24-bit
shows mostly good results, scanning at higher bit depth is of advantage. The 30-bit log
format gives you because of its logarithmic tonal range much more nuances in
shadows, which are also seen more differentiated in human perception. This will
let you correct intensity, gamma, colours, etc. in compositing with the
Cineon
format without banding effects and with more detail
headroom. For compositing purposes we recommend 64-bit or floating point software like Eyeon Digital Fusion, Discreet Combustion, Apple Shake, Nuke or Adobe After Effects Pro.
