35mm film recording from data or video

Film recording from data is done 2k to 4k, 24-bit lin to 30-bit log on our 35mm cine recorders.
The recorded image corresponds with
1828 (2k) and 3656 (4k) pixels horizontally with the Kodak© Cineon® digital film system.

Film recording from videotapes is available from all common formats [MiniDV to HDCAM] based on a graded master.
A 90 minute film recording from video source is regularly done within 10 business days.

Digital Video should have the best resolution, least compression, gain free recording with a wide range of values and progressive mode if available.

Film recording from data requires numbered image sequences [for example: reel_5_00001.tga to reel_5_28800.tga]. Data media can be external hard disks [FireWire, USB 2.0, SCSI] and DVD or CD as well. Data tapes are not accepted any longer.

To optimize the result of your project Pixel Partner ® can guide you from the beginning.

If wanted we can also coordinate and manage sound studio and lab work.

The rates for recordings include preparation, 35mm film negative and developing (lab of our choice).
In contrast to other competitors there are no hidden additional fees for data input or scaling of images for example.

Recommendations:

Test recordings

To check the appearance of the generated images on the screen and to ensure correct gamma and colour, we recommend to make test recordings before starting the final rendering or compositing.

For checking and calibration of gamma and colour values on your computer systems we can supply you with appropriate test pattern. As visual and technical reference for Cineon handling Kodak has a Digital-LAD image available for download (12.5 MB file size).

How to use typo and logos in spots

More and more cinemas adopt to the US-Widescreen format 1:1.85, but still some show EuroWide 1:1.66.
To make sure your work is properly screened in all theatres, better produce for EuroWide, but limit
typo and logos and all important elements to the so called title safe area (80% width /height) of the narrower US format.

If you decide to render just the 1:1.85 part, be aware of problems when the theatre shows 1:1.66 !
The black top and bottom areas of your film may show up and any inaccuracy in the projection will become visually enhanced. But even then you should limit your important content to the title safe area.
